Before you commit to one

Fares are moving against you. Mexico City priced at $553 on a 7h06 routing on Jul 25 and $903 on 12h30 by Jul 28. Monterrey priced all seven seats in one booking on Jul 26 and returned nothing at seven two days later. International pricing this close to Labor Day is decaying week over week, so anything here needs repricing the day you book.

Phoenix is the constraint, not the budget. Grand Cayman ($456, 5h35), Panama City ($629 on a 4h48 nonstop), and San Salvador ($658 on a 4h20 nonstop) all beat the survivor on price and flight time from Washington. Every one of them dies on the single Phoenix leg, which has no short or cheap routing to the Caribbean or Central America. Mexico survives because Phoenix is a Mexico gateway.

How availability was tested. A route that returned nothing at seven seats was re-run at three, four, five, and six to tell a real inventory limit apart from a fare-bucket ceiling. Puerto Vallarta is the clear case: it prices fine at six and returns nothing at seven, so the seats exist but not in one booking.

Split bookings cost more to manage. Two reservations mean two payment groups, separate change fees, and no protection if one leg is disrupted — the airline owes nothing to passengers on the other ticket.

Passports. All eight travelers need valid passports. With the trip under six weeks out, routine processing no longer fits, so anyone without a current book is a hard blocker no matter what the fare says.

Lodging is unverified. Only the flights were checked. There is no confirmed eight-adult house in Monterrey yet, so treat it as flights-only until someone prices a real listing.

The comparison. Monterrey costs about $287 more per person in airfare than Austin, the cheapest domestic flight, and roughly $574 more than driving to New York. It buys a passport stamp and a genuinely different weekend, not a cheaper one.
